We hope you are finding time to be with family and friends and reflect on the year as 2018 comes to a close. As the saying goes “The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot”. Whatever goals you were aiming for in your life this year, we hope you made it. But, as usual, there are some that don’t get accomplished. We are certainly no strangers to setting goals, and sometimes missing the mark. Here are five quick tips to keep in mind as you plan for what is to come in 2019.
- Goals MUST be measurable – Losing weight or getting smarter has no meaning. Losing 10 lbs. and reading three new books in your field of expertise are measurable.
- Goals MUST have
purpose outside of the goal itself – I want to lose 10 lbs. to help reduce the joint pain in my knees. The purpose is the key tothe motivation . - You can’t go back and change the past, but you can always create a new ending – If you had a goal that is measurable, has
purpose , and is realistic, don’t ever give it up. We should all try to eliminate the feeling that “I’m too old to do X”. Regardless of the outcome, striving towards a worthy goal is a great adventure in its own right. - Bring a friend along – Finding a person or group to help keep you accountable is a great hack to achieving your goals. Want to read more? Join a book club. Want to get in shape? Join an exercise class or running club. Want to give back to your community? Volunteer at a local charity.
- Bit by bit – Most goals are not one-time events that can be completed in an afternoon (unless you want to go skydiving). Break up the larger goal into smaller parts so you can celebrate small wins along the way. Create a visual display of the goal that you can use to measure your progress. There is only one way to eat an elephant…one bite at a time.
